The Austria Haus Club is a four-story hotel and fractional fee club in the center of Vail Village. The site’s prominent location, at the entrance to Vail Village, combined with several difficult design problems, presented many daunting challenges that were eventually resolved to great success. Among these was a restrictive height limit that resulted in many difficult mechanical and structural engineering issues.
A commercial arcade at the street level acts as a continuation of the Bridge Street and Crossroads shopping districts and helps to link these formerly separated areas. The building mass is arranged into distinct elevations that give the appearance of related but individually adjoining structures. Partly to achieve this impression, there is little repetition in the floor plans of the twenty-five hotel rooms and eighteen club units. This adds a great deal of visual interest and character to the development.
